Fly With It

It's not such a bad idea.

The port of Astoria may hire someone to market airline tickets to potential users in the business world. The offer would be a $50 price per ticket in a bulk buy.

The thinking is that this approach will keep the airline in business at least another 11 months. After that it's most likely to join Empire and Horizon in the history books as far as air service to the north coast is concerned.

I'm assuming here that unless you have the wherewithal to lay out the bulk price most people would still pay normal fares and fees and continue driving instead of flying.

To pay for this, $40,000 would come off the back end of the connect Oregon funds to pay for the marketing effort. I just wonder who might buy?

If government buys them to use for trips it may be cheaper than reimbursing staffers for driving. Port Director Crider points this out saying it could end up costing the port half the cost since he is eligible for a $100 reimbursement for using his own vehicle. Seems excessive but after all we are talking government here.

How many private businesses would consider buying into this strategy is anybodies guess and I certainly don't have the answer. It will come down to how that decision will impact cash flow at a time when people are nervous about the state of the economy. For some it might pay. I hope it does and I wish the Port luck in the endeavor.

We Haven't Figured It Out

I'm not one to text while driving. Texting while doing nothing else is about my speed. When I first heard that people do this I had to scratch my head a little. How the heck do you do that and keep enough attention on the road and the cars around you to avoid a head-on? Unfortunately laws that are aimmed at banning the practice aren't effective. People who persist in doing this just attempt to hold the phone lower so it can't be easily seen which causes them to lower their eyes from the road entirely for longer periods of time.

Then we have issues with people texting each other when a meeting is going on that should demand your full attention. This happens in business meetings and some government meetings like city commission meetings.

The city of Gresham Council is considering a new law that would ban texting during their meetings. The new rule is justified over concerns about texting being a method of conducting business out of the public view. That's right. Appearently council members are texting each other and city staff members during the course of the meeting rather than having those discussions verbally.

Remember when email was becoming popular? Some City Councils were under fire for exchanging emails that could be construed as reaching consensus on issues before council meetings were actually held to hold public discussions. This ended up with efforts at transparency by making emails available to the press.

There needs to be a standard here that includes texting. As a matter of safety on the road, or the operation of heavy equipment the force of law might be appropriate but efforts so far have been largely ineffective. In other cases people need to apply rules of common courtesy in using this technology. Some of that comes in correcting behaviors by setting policy and sticking to it.

Fed up?

We should all be standing up and saying "enough is enough!".

It is long past time for you and me and every right-thinking person to take a stand on this issue. Failing to do so will cost more lives and allow continued misery.

Tonight we broadcast a special event calling attention to the destructive behavior known as domestic violence. It was important, informative, touching and tearful.

It's not the first time we have joined with the Woman's Resource Center in the attempt to reach out to those in harm's way or simply call attention to the issue. This time was different though. This time a large room full of local people from all walks of life joined together in a call to action.

What can you do?

Tune in to KAST or KAST1370.com tomorrow morning at 8 and find out.

Interesting Broadcast

I could have spend another hour talking with Lew Barnes this morning. Judging by the volume of calls we had this morning it seems many of you could do the same.

Barnes has the kind of background, experience and plain old commonsense that would make him a perfect pick to elect for the state rep race. Most politicians (oh heck, every politician) is like a fog machine. Ask a question of any kind and they start putting out fog instead of direct answers. Lew is a fog cutter. That's because he's not a typical modern politician. He is a new breed for Oregon politics.

I did get a call from a listener asking that if we are going to have political discussions to have every side at the table at once.

I'm not opposed to broadcasting debates. We have done so in the past. However, I think there is value in the one-on-one interview. Especially when you have open
phones and the public can participate as happened this morning.

What do you think?
