Q&A

Quite a few comments on the weekend round-up post and a couple with questions that readers would like answered. I'll give it a try. Could you remind us all again how much money NNB Radio stations took in in advertising dollars from the various natural gas entities that were trying to convince us to allow these projects to happen? Could that possibly be related to why you would still be trying to advocate for these companies? Answer: Northern Star Natural Gas was an advertising client on NNB radio and ran a regular schedule of ads in support of their project for which they paid just like any other advertiser. NNB also participated in an annual promotional campaign each December in which we took phone calls on the air from listeners who made Christmas wishes which Northern Star granted to the best of their ability. I believe we did run promotional announcements following the campaign each year to say that Northern Star had spent well over $5000.00 each year to do things like get people home for the holidays, buy toys and clothing for those in need..etc. Oregon LNG and Oregon Pipeline are not advertising clients of NNB. Their approach does not seem to include an advertising campaign. Well, Tom, if you actually updated your website with the comments of listeners in a timely manner, you would have heard something different. However, as long as you update when you feel like it and only select the information you want, you will be, unfortuately, very much like Steve Forrester's Daily A. So, why are you here anyway? Answer: It's true that I never have as much time as I would like to respond directly to listener comments here and to moderate comments as quickly as some might like. As far as picking what I publish goes I think if you were to read some of the comments to my posts you might be wondering instead why I would allow some of them that appear to be personal attacks. I think most people understand the difference between a chat room or forum format and a blog. Some don't and want to carry on conversations on line here. I've tried running "boards" in the past and, frankly, I don't have the time to devote to moderate those properly. I like to write. I like to share a personal perspective. This blog provides a space where I can expand on some of the things that the "tyranny of the clock" does not permit on the radio. I do enjoy reading all the comments and sometimes I learn something new.

  1. Hi Tom...I would like to make a friendly correction to the post about what Bradwood Spent on the Christmas Wishes program. The first year, it was 24K, because it was the year of the big storm (2007) and we were approved to give about $15K extra to local food banks and such. The 2nd & 3rd years, we did about $12K each. It was a great program, one which I know sure put ME into the Christmas spirit, because I got to be the one delivering the gifts at the office!

  2. I agree with the post by anonymous. How dare you make money when companies advertise on your station. It's not like revenue from advertising is important to your business.

Your the best Tom...I also would like to see comments posted quicker.(like instant)What's the reason the moderator has to approve the comments?
Cindy Howe did a terrible job running the bus, find the money trail and will find the reason we have lost a good service The bus board did many spots on KAST, looking for vounteers, or was that a community freebie?
Our population demands we have a bus service. Seniors, working people, tourists, students, jobs and the handicap so many reasons to get with the times. We are at the age of decent transportation. We should not being going downhill.
Notice you didn't have anything to say about the boss of our County.
    The trouble making DA.

  4. The NNB/NSNG-Bradwood Landing relationship has been, I would venture, ingrained, permanently, into the mindset of just about all of us in Clatsop County Tom.

Why do you find it necessary at this point to try a cursory, at best, explanation?

What's coming that we may need to know about?

    Anon,
You are wrong when you assert:
"Our population demands we have a bus service." If this were true it would not need to be subsidized and the buses would be running full. Or the bus could simply raise the rate they are charging for their service as they have plenty of this "demand" you speak of. If demand were there, you wouldn't overwhelmingly have too much supply.

This reminds me of Floyd Holcomb lecturing Seaport Air about how Clatsop County has "clearly demonstrated that they want an airline, so if air service fails, it will be Seaport's fault".

Apparently everyone around here thinks that a WANT justifies market DEMAND. Sorry but no. Parting with your hard earned dollars is the only way for a community to actually support a service. If clatsop county wanted air service we would have bought tickets. If clatsop county needed that many buses, we would have rode on them.

    Chickens my friends.
They roost and they've come home.

Oh horsefeathers, Mcgee. Don't even try to project your inanity on to the residents of this county. You speak for nobody but yourself.
