Well...not quite.
The twenty or so, mostly out-of-towners, braved a perfect day to hold up signs. I'm not quite sure what the signs said since most were being held every which way. I'm pretty sure it had something to do with liquid natural gas. The location of the protest was odd. They were somewhat close to the wooden Indian statue at the entrance to Astoria so at first I was hopeful they were protesting against it and calling for it to be moved someplace more appropriate...like Westport. I was disappointed in this faint hope when it became clear it was just another protest of the Warrenton LNG project.
Since I strongly believe one should not be critical without offering up a better idea and in the interest of the community as a whole here are some helpful suggestions for the next big protest.
1. If you are protesting a project to be built in Warrenton don't stage a protest in Astoria. It is a matter of credibility to at least get the city right.
2. The use of very uniform style and color signage sends the wrong message. You already have a unfair image in the community as lock-step morons. Take immediate steps to encourage at least the appearence of being intelligent individuals who have gathered almost spontaneously.
3 Involve young people. Right now you come off as a bunch of older people who are acting selfishly. If you can't get actual young people I would suggest using stand up cut outs of young people. When an older person objects to projects that will create jobs or increase the tax base leading to better public safety and money for schools the general public doesn't understand that you are actually standing with a bunch of strangers because at least it gives you something to do. The perception changes as soon as kids are carrying the signs. Sometimes.
I hope these suggestions can help you protestors out there do a more effective job..
Well, if anybody should know aboutinvolvement and commitment to a special interest it would be you and NNB wouldn't it Tom?
ReplyDeleteCan we assume you are about to bring OLNG/Pipeline and that potential revenue into the fold?
You're coming back with a vengeance aren't you my man?
I noticed that many of those anti-LNG rallyers were my neghbors, our neighbors Tom, taking time out of their lives to stand against an issue that is in no way just Warrenton's issue but an issue that will impact all our lives.
You notice that Tom?
I missed you too.

Tom, how did everyone make it through the day with you being out?
ReplyDeleteI noticed the same thing Tom. I was walking by the Boyington building and saw abunch of Senior Citizens, in red, protesting. It wasn't until I got close enough I could see they were the Anti-LNG crowd.
ReplyDeleteI just can't figure out why this group of senior citizens hates us so much. Why don't they want the younger generations to have family wage jobs and a decent quality of life? I guess they got theirs and now don't care about any of us. What a bunch of selfish hypocrites
What a nice McGee free summer????
ReplyDeleteMcGee's got it right for once!
ReplyDelete"an issue that will impact all our lives".
IE. Money and Jobs for our economy and a great impact!!
I've been away from the blogs for so long I forgot how often PM embarrasses himself...
I needed that laugh. Thanks Tom and Mr. Magoo, I mean er, McGee.
Freel"s got it right. The anti everything folks have to demonstrate in Astoria because they either can't find Warrenton or know that nobody there will listen to them. And, it sure does appear they are a bunch of old people who just don't like change or they can get real little kids to do thing the kid does not understand. But, where would Astoria be without the two Loris, the Rockas and the demonstration doctor? We would certainly not be able to maintain our image of an ancient city without them.
ReplyDeleteWell, it's at least encouraging to see Freel is a bit more prudent in posting comments to his blog here.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he has learned something from his hiatus and will stay with that concept to, if nothing else, convey the perception that he does indeed give a crap about what you say, pro or con to his and NNB's view.
"Selfish" is a good word for these people. They have no concern for our community, and they're certainly giving Senior Citizens a bad reputation. The local nuts can't even raise a "quorum" so they have to call on outsiders to help. Wonder if they ever join the volunteers who do so much for our community. Really, they should get a life!
ReplyDeleteSelfish and self inmportant is right! God save these senior citizens who lingered away their productive times in the quest for money and, only now, want to save the world. It will be interesting to see if their schemes will be well received on the other side.
