Rumor Control

Here's the latest rumor about Commissioner Ann Samuelson. Recall petition gatherers are now saying she was responsible for the NOAA fleet going to Newport rather than Astoria.

Incredible.

It seems some of those involved in the recall easily confuse the Clatsop County Commission, of which Ann is a member, and the Astoria Port Commission which decided not to pursue the NOAA fleet.

Ann had nothing to do with it, of course, but the signature collectors will say anything to find a hot button that would convince you to sign.

  1. Well, as important as NOAA's relocation could have been for us, don't you think that Clatsop County Board of Commissioners could have played a pivotal role in assisting Port of Astoria in making every effort to attempt the struggling Port Commission in making this happen?

Wasn't there a bunch of noise from CCBoC around then about "The Port" and County Commission working together, harmoniously, towards a more prosperous future for us all?

Oh!...Yeah!...That was when "The County" lent "Port" that seed money for Tongue Point.

What happened on that and what is County doing to help move the Tongue Point purchase along?

What's County doing, in cooperation with Port to help market this very important and productive piece of real estate in Tongue Point to foster jobs?

The Housing Authority has been horribly mis-managed but it's not Samuelson's fault.
Commissioner Patricia Roberts is the one who's let this ship hit a reef my sitting on the board that mis-managed all this money for housing for poor people.

The Port's failure to aggressively go after the NOAA fleet is on their backs. It would've been a good move on the part of City and County commissions to send letters to the Port Commission urging them to go after the fleet.
It is ABSURD to put the Port's failure out as a talking point against Commissioner Samuelson or Commissioner Hazen.

  4. Meanwhile back at my post as a County Commissioner, I've procured a generator for the Nehalem Valley Church, which I will personally deliver this week so that the newly formed, NV Alert group can operate out of that location providing food, shelter, and community if another severe storm hits far south county...this has been on my bucket list as a County Commissioner and I'm checking it off! Have a great day Tom, and thanks so much for fielding some of the untruths out there, I'm amazed at what I'm hearing. Just a note regarding their campaign, our County Commission has no jurisdiction regarding pipelines, and never will, it is federal. Further, we don't get to vote on LNG any more than we could vote on the price of gasoline, we make land use decisions.

  5. Lets set the record straight. The decision not to pursue the money to bring NOAA to Astoria had nothing to do with the County, I'm told it was primarily a decision based on a conversation Skip Hauke, and the CEDR Director had with the Daily Astoria owner Steve Forrestor.

Apparently, as was told to the CEDR members, that Mr. Forrestor had contacts in Seattle that the State of Washington would never let NOAA leave Seattle. How wrong he was, but I'm sure he will never admit it. He failed to explain his role on his recent ediorial.

Despite personally working on this for two years on at least getting a look see, Sen. Betsy Johnson, Skip Hauke and others deserve a big thank you for turning the governments head toward Oregon, and at the end of the day, we'll keep trying to get something to our area.

NOAA belongs in Oregon, I think Tongue Point, but it is a victory nevertheless and Newport will benefit greatly.

We should all be happy and Astoria will see residual benfits or it being in Newport.

I predict vessels parking at the POA because the bar closeses there much more than the CR Bar.

Out of 35,000+ pages of documentation on one project, LUBA had concerns over what amounts to five paragraphs.

IF it was a BAD decision, LUBA would have OVERTURNED it. LUBA did not do that. CRK and ALL the PETITIONERS LOST on their whole LUBA complaint. COMPLETELY LOST. They asked LUBA to OVERTURN the verdict. LUBA refused to overturn on ALL 31 points. ALL 23 points that CRK made and ALL 8 points that CRITC made.

Saying that the County got 98% right is like saying a car only lost one tire, not all four. LUBA reversed the approval on the most basic grounds; that it is not a small or medium sized facility as required by the County's own land use laws.
Four of the the County Commissioners never even addressed that and with both US Senators, the Governor, and the state Attorney General thinking Bradwood is a bad idea does anyone really believe this is over?
And that assumes someone will lend Bradwood $2 billion when Northwest Natural is CUTTING its prices.
