Roberts Recall Moves Forward

The recall effort against Clatsop County Commissioner Patricia Roberts moves forward. County Clerk Cathie Garber says the chief petitioner is Larry Well from Gearhart; an agent authorization is designated as Deborah McEwen. 441-valid signatures need to be certified by November 23rd. Ten days follow to verify those signatures. Patricia Roberts has five days from December 3rd to decide to resign or justify her course in office. An election must be held by January 12th. Meanwhile, recall efforts of chair Jeff Hazen and Ann Samuelson have a deadline of October 19th to return signatures. Hazen and Samuelson have until November 3rd to make their decisions. The recall election for both would be set 35-days from November 3rd or December 8th. However, Garber says if all three recalls happen on the same date this would save the county money. "If we have three separate elections, it could be probably anywhere from ten to twelve-thousand dollars apiece."

The recall of Roberts states in part that she's repeatedly voted in support of the Bradwood Landing LNG site application. Roberts tells KAST that she's been anticipating the second effort to recall her. "I represent people in my district and the entire county to the best of my ability and also for their betterment. If you disagree with someone on one issue.and it's because of that one issue that you decide to recall them.I haven't done anything illegal or immoral.or anything wrong. I've just been doing what I was elected to do and I'm going to continue to do that. I hope people realize that this is just an abuse of the recall system."

Some reason you are not mentioning the OTHER reason they are trying to recall Roberts?
Her gross mismanagement of the Housing Authority where she is vice-chair?
An argument can be made that voters just elected her, if just barely, but did the voters know about the Housing fiasco?

  2. Just the simple fact that Roberts along with Hazen and Samuelson, regarding Texas based energy speculator Northern Star Natural Gas's proposed LNG Transfer/Storage Terminal project at Bradwood Landing, have all, against the repeated Findings of Fact by The Clatsop County Planniing staff, have voted to support this project is in itself a breech of confidnece and not in the interests of the citizens of Clatsop County.

The simple fact that Roberts along with Hazen and Samuelson deliberately attempted to change sensitive zoning and the County Comprehensive Plan at the dictate of this same private coporation, NSNG, to allow high pressure natural gas transmission lines through it and all other porperty of the same zoning in the county is, in my view, a breech of confidence and not in the interests of the citizens of Clatsop County and was defeated in a 62% voter turnout referendum.

Roberts, herself, sitting on the board, Assistant Chair, of the Northwest Oregon Housing Authority and because of acute mismanagement was on the verge of displacing some 200-300 families does not help her cause either.

I can't figure out how 39% of county voters voting for measure 4-131 (pipeline issue) is a mandate?

The recall crowd is manufacturing issues and simply telling un-truths since they don't have anything solid to go on. This is just plain vindictivness (on 1 issue) and a mis-use of the law and county resources.

what exactly did the voters vote on in this ballot measure???

  5. Excuse me, that was a 58% voter turnout with an approx. 2 to 1 victory of support for Measure 4-131.

Of course, we should remember that Patrick McGee admitted to putting out bogus polls. Does he do this in an effort to sway votes or is he just dishonest? In any case, that is one good reason why no one should pay attention to what he says.

They just have a non-binding advisory county-wide vote on LNG at the same time there's the next county-wide election. It couldn't cost but a couple hundred bucks and then we'd have a better idea. The "Piplines in Parks" thing wasn't a straight LNG vote but 80% of the County Commission support LNG. Does anyone really think 80% of Clatsop County voters support LNG?
Under the previous poster theory only 29% of Americans "really" elected Obama (Only about 65% of people are registred, 70 percent of them voted and Obama won by about 53%).

McGee is right that there was a 58% voter turn out... but it was still 39% of county residents voting for the measure. I seem to remember, though, the crowd that was pushing this ballot measure was emphatic about it NOT being about LNG. Its funny how they lack any sort of integrity or sense of honesty.

Recall backers are claiming that last year’s “No LNG Pipelines in Parks” referendum should be interpreted as a “No” Vote on LNG. Yet in the weeks leading up to the referendum, they told voters the exact opposite, which was that the referendum had nothing to do with LNG.

At the time, the referendum sponsors were Columbia River Business Alliance (Don West), Northwest Property Rights Coalition (Marc Auerbach) and Columbia Riverkeeper (Olivia Schmidt). Together, they formed a group called Clatsop County Citizens for Common Sense.

Not coincidentally, these are the same people behind the effort to recall three Clatsop County Commissioners because they say the Commission is ignoring the referendum results. Results, worth noting, based on a referendum this very group said had little or nothing to do with LNG.

Here are just a few examples:

“Clearly the referendum cannot halt the project. This is not the subject of the vote. A NO vote asks Northern Star to live up to their commitment to be a good neighbor and not put their pipeline through our parks.”
    - “FAQ Frequently asked questions,” Clatsop Citizens for Common Sense website

“The referendum is not for the small portion of natural gas pipelines that Bradwood has proposed; in fact the referendum has no bearing on the Northern Star project.”
    - Don West, Aug. 21, 2008

“It’s pretty straight forward; it’s not a ‘no’ vote about the LNG facility itself….”
    - Marc Auerbach, Dezmo Zone, KAST 1080 AM, August 18, 2008

“Again this is not a referendum about Bradwood Landing; this is a referendum about County Law…..”
    - Olivia Schmidt, KMUN, August 29, 2008

  10. So what's your worry "Anonym 1:10PM"?

They, The County Commission, it would appear to some, under orders from NSNG/Bradwood are going to take another run at the same property and this time and attempt to shoot that 36" diameter, High Pressure Natural Gas Transmission Pipeline through a new Wetlands Zoning that allows them.

We better stand back on this one, it's going to be a real circus.

Every time ANY developer appears before the county or any of the city councils to have a development HELPED THROUGH THE PROCESS are all them "under orders" from the developers? No, they are under orders from OUR MANDATES!

The #1 mandate ALL of them have is to GENERATE INCOME for our communities. They are to HELP DEVELOPERS in any and all ways to comply with the land use ordinances and laws AND to continuously keep our ordinances and laws changing and growing as is needed to keep pace with a developing world!

Since when have you ever done ANYTHING except stand back?

It would be nice to hear someone ask Auerbach, Twombly, Caplan and Durheim EXACTLY what kind of work/dollars/business/industry they have brought to the area? Nicer still if we heard their answer.

  12. NSNG specifically required that particular OPR property in question be rezoned to accommodate their pipeline, it is on paper and not only did CCBofC and its Planning Commission help NSNG/Bradwood with that rezoning, they were prepared to change the County Comprehensive Plan as well, making all OPR properties in Clatsop County allow High Pressure NG Transmission and like pipelines as well with no specific language otherwise.

So who are you, other than some anonymous nobody, to ask any of these people what they have brought to the area?

What do you bring here but a snippy attitude and unaccontablity for what you say?
