Push Poll...... Earth First!

I've been told that some local group is conducting a telephone poll on LNG. If your answers indicate no support for LNG projects then the questions turn to your feelings on recalling or replacing certain county commissioners. If true, this is obviously a "push" poll. This tactic has two effects. First it allows for manipulation of the outcome based on how the questions are posed. Second it allows for the manipulation of the respondent by leading that person neatly down the garden path. If you don't support LNG terminals here and commissioners do appear to then that must mean you would support the removal of those commissioners.

Disagreement on one issue does not necessarily automatically lead to ouster. Just thought I'd point that out.

My favorite bumper sticker reads "EARTH FIRST!... we'll log the other planets later"

The radical environmental group Earth First! is bringing it's roadshow to Astoria to the Blue Scorcher Bakery at 7pm tonight. There is an excellent piece on the group
to be found on the blog North Coast Oregon and you'll find the link to that site on this page.

Local loggers have reason to be concerned about this group being here to provide training and encouragement to those who willingly break the law by destroying equipment, blocking roads and chaining themselves to tree stands.

Just a quick lift from NCO:

Earth First! is offering Consensus and Facilitation, Legal Training to know your rights, legal observer training, getting arrested and going to jail, police liaison and grand jury. Also, backwoods survival, basic and advanced blockades, lockdowns, anti-oppression and climb trainings. This consists of mid-line descent, setting/shooting a line, traversing, girth hitching, sky walking, platform setting, cantilevers, trainers training, knots, tree sits as blockades.

So then the Blue Scorcher Bakery is now the local headquarters for radical environmentalists?

Super.

Blue Scorcher is out of bounds in my book. What they are doing is not good for our county.
What are these people thinking? How do these people earn a living?
Blue Scorcher, I will never set foot inside your doors.

Those of you who are anti-LNG will find Earth First your best ally and will gladly attack anyone or any business that is pro-LNG.

I wonder how many other businesses are pro-Earth First that just haven't been publicized. Now The Blue Scorcher is headlined people will boycott it. Although I'm not pro Earth First's organization, I still plan to buy stuff from the Blue Scorcher because it is good. Although I am now more an Astoria Coffee House fan :)

Hi Tom. I listened to your show this morning. One of the most noticeable elements of the continued debate on LNG is the absence of the pro-LNG people. The anti-LNG people are crying the loudest. That makes the debate appear one sided.

We've all seen scare tactics used throughout history for a variety of issues, by all sides. So that is not new. Unless a person breaks away from the sound bites of today's news and actually looks at an issue, then, they are being guided by misinformation, at times anyway.

I think a great deal of the concerns about LNG are aesthetic as you said. So, they use fear of leaks and explosions rather than talking about their issue. There is an LNG plant in Japan, the tanks of which are under ground and there is a golf course that plays over them. So, LNG companies can, in some fashion, address the aesthetics issues.

History shows that these plants are safe. The caller who talked about gasoline trucks exploding was on with other dangers. I've been given to understand (I can't verify this) that if the boilers at the Mill blew up the explosion would take out a huge hunk of the Skipanon down to Warrenton Deep Sea.

I'm not sure if I'm for the plants or not. The bulk of the jobs impact is a couple of years during construction. Then, there will be only about 80 or 86 people working the plant with half of those being from out of the area do to local lack of expertise. So, are 40 jobs worth it?

We most certainly need living wage light to medium clean industry here. There has to be a break away from minimum wage service jobs aimed at attracting tourists. People currently in those jobs need to have something to work towards.

Anyway, good show this morning (7.1.09).

Why is Earth First offering classes that teach people to break the law? The US is, first and foremost, a nation based on the rule of law. This rule is the reason we have remained a great nation. The rule of law means, even to the most uneducated person, that one should obey the law and make changes in accordance with the legal process (God knows that governments change laws very often). There are plenty of countries not based on the rule of law were these people can live and make up their own rules (if they have the courage and ability). If they cannot obey our laws, they should not be here. Civil disobedience is actually a CRIME. Of course, some of these people could join the Army and take out their agressions there. But, then, that would be patriotic, something these people are certainly not.
