The Clatsop County Interagency Narcotics Task force made another bust. This time it was cocaine and crack cocaine which netted three men some jail time. One of them will be taking a trip back to Mexico and saying goodbye to his local 17-year-old girlfriend. The 26-year-old Mexican national was found with the girl, about $1800 in cash and about $15,000 worth of cocaine.
Considering our relatively low population base it does seem that we have more than our share of these issues. The Sheriff says you should talk to your kids even if they roll their eyes when you bring it up. That's a very good idea but cocaine isn't usually the drug of choice for kids. While crack is cheap, cocaine is not. The market here must be considerable among adults who can afford to put lots of money up their nose.
Tom, why are you surprised. The 5 or 6 people on the interagency drug task force has commonly done about two or three raids a year. They always come up with small amounts of drugs and money and, with the help of the District Attorney, the druggies usually get home before the cops do. That has been happening since Bergin has been involved in drug cases when he was a little sergeant and is unlikely to change as long as he is sheriff. It also makes sense because Bergin always says "it was a six month investigation" - so you can only have two a year. In almost all cases the dealers are mexican and, of course, we welcome there here with open arms (just read the Daily A). Interestingly, neither the paper or the radio will tell us if the Mexicans are here illegally or not, which just adds to the welcome. If change is going to come in this area, the people in charge will need to be changed. Otherwise, don't be surprised.
