An Open Letter

I urge you to copy the following, add your name, print and mail it. If you have friends or family without web access please make copies for them to send. Consider sending a copy to the legislators and congressmen listed to the left of this post. It's time they heard from all of us on this issue. tf

Gov. Ted Kulongowski
160 State Capitol
900 Court Street
Salem, Oregon 97301-4047

Dear Sir,

I'm struggling to understand your decision to discourage industrial development in Clatsop County. In light of Oregon's unemployment rate and the continuing downward trend in private investment here it is unfathomable to me that you would not be in the lead when it comes to supporting the construction of Bradwood Landing LNG.

It is clear that this is a time-tested, safe, clean industry. It is clear that the company seeking to employ hundreds of workers over the multiple years construction will require is a good community partner. They have taken many steps to get involved in supporting programs and organizations that help our food banks, our schools, our needy. Northern Star Natural Gas has made it their business to be a visible force for good in Clatsop County since the inception of the Bradwood proposal.

The process for siting the terminal storage facility has been transparent. The company has dealt with every objection in an entirely open and honest manner. They have worked to preserve our lower Columbia environment by providing far more mitigation than required by law. They continue to work with the state in completing the permitting process.

Those who object have yet to make a meaningful case against this project. Every single argument against this project quickly folds under further investigation.

Now is the time to support this project. By doing so you support the wishes of the majority here who struggle to make ends meet and don't have the time to stand on a street corner with a protest sign.

Please do what is right.

Thanks so much, Tom. You will get a lot of flack on this letter from the "I am against absolutely any new way to make a living being made available to Clatsop County Residents" groupies.
Who are these people who have time to protest and attend meetings constantly? Not the working poor in this area, I'm sure of that!!
I see that the only people with a legitimate gripe are the property owners in Clifton....their wonderful area where time has pretty much stood still will be disturbed. I do remember when many people traveled that narrow little road (and it was smaller than it is now) to and from all the shifts at the Bradwood Mill, so it has not always been as quiet as it presently is. (Remember how loud the Mill was, and how the whistle that signaled workers could be heard for many miles?)
I don't see much "stimulus" headed this way.....maybe a few construction jobs, which will be bid on by large companies (because the Federal Government will require large bonds and prevailing wages to be paid). I don't think that any new companies or businesses will be formed or opened to begin to replace the jobs of all who now are on unemployment (IF they had a job which had unemployment benefits).
We are NEVER going to get the ideal industry which provides lots of jobs, is "green" (I hate that term), has a perfect safety record, pays a family wage, and disturbes not one fish, deer, road, neighbor, etc. Oh, yes, it should be a lovely business to look at, in case there are any residents who have a view of this perfect new business (industry would be an offensive word to use).
So, unless you are retired, independently wealthy or have a much better idea for that site which can be started in record time...STOP the protests and continual search for some other reason that Bradwood Landing should be stopped.
Thanks again, Tom, you have taken a brave stance!!

  4. HOORAY FOR YOU TOM:
You are right, unless those of us that are for LNG speak up the echo extremists will continue to control what is allowed into our state.
I for one am tired of this movement ruining our economy on the coast. They have managed to ruin any industry here and people are suffering because of it.

We need to take a stand now before it is to late..

good letter Tom, I sent (emailed) to all concerned parties...
I wish that you could (KAST) have Michael Desmond interview Witt, Johnson, and Boone, and pin them down thoroughly on theyre positions on these types of job killing, utility rate expanding, hardship creating bills going thru Salem, there are several, and these will only add to our hardships. With the exception of Betsy Johnson, we dont hear much from the other two. The ruling party in Salem, seems to be bent on eliminating NG, coal, dams, or anything else practical, and private sector (private sector contributes taxes, public sector only creates revenue streams) and they dont seem to understand how many clatsop co. business's would suffer or die under the burden of astronomically higher utility rates, with scarce supplies, and under some of the cap and trade proposal floating around Salem.
Now days it seems its political party, and philosophy first....constituants last!
