The Other Side
In this weekend's edition of Coastweek with Jeff Nelson we aired a reprise of an anti-nat gas pipeline meeting featuring the out of town players who are pushing locals to be very afraid of natural gas.
I hope you had a chance to listen in. It was full of scare tactics and half truths that went unchallenged by audience members who probably thought they were finally getting the "facts' about LNG.
The speaker makes her living by doing this and gets her paycheck(s) from the riverkeepers and an organization named "Commonsense.ORG".
In her presentation she states that Japan and other countries will simply outbid U.S. gas buyers thus driving up the cost of using LNG transport and storage as a method of ensuring gas supplies. She concludes by stating, as fact, the sheer speculation that this will mean that buying gas from other countries and shipping it here in bulk will be more expensive that what we are currently doing to secure supplies from Canada, or using dwindling domestic resources.
In the comments made by FERC in approving certification for Bradwood Landing last week it was said that by approving that step the process would be open to the free market system. This implies that since the federal government has given it's stamp of approval to continue, with over 100 safety and environmental conditions that must be met, the process is now subject to market conditions and it's survival will depend on delivering this energy product based on good old American principals of supply and demand. I think we can handle that aspect quite nicely.
The question locals should be asking is: what exactly is the purpose of commonsense.org and the riverkeepers? I'm told that the local democratic party has decided to hire one of these paid opponents to run their office in Astoria. The national party is aware of this direction being taken in Clatsop County and term it a "problem".
If you are a democrat, just how comfortable were you to see "No Pipelines In Parks" signs posted on top of signs supporting Obama at the local headquarters?
Is the democratic party really about "no growth"? Is it really about no jobs for rural Americans?
Has the democratic party become a place where radical environmentalists have found a comfortable home? I guess so considering how they have embraced Al Gore's half-baked theories. How does this cloud the issue for democrats who believe the party should be a champion for the worker and the average family?
Is this what we have become?

What she should concede is Astoria is being overtaken by a very astute group of outsiders who want to make it their own. Quite honestly, i'm glad to NOT call Astoria home anymore. It certainly isn't the home i grew up in.
LNG is only the first stop on a much larger agenda. They have figured out how to change the political landscape and with the local paper editor helping them, well, there are a few good people who were casualties of his ink. There will be more soon enough.
The terms Astoria and Jobs will soon enough be nothing more than an irony.
In the overall, I found it pretty well balanced on information but, how you take it depends on which side you are as usual and now, even you are about to insert the overused and inane argument of..."there are no LNG Pipelines and that property in "No Park", which clearly shows you, have learned nothing, even with an abundance of fact presented to you.
Mr. McGee, you promoted and voted on NOTHING...the public gets NOTHING...but it costs the taxpayer PLENTY to put on these "will of the people" showdowns...these people bring NOTHING to the community but turmoil, they offer no solutions, and promote hatred and lies.

Glenn?
Come on!
You have to be doing this "Tongue-in-Cheek"
This really how "The Silent Majority" feels these days?
Now, who is "The They" again?
Making the email rounds is a call for all Anti-LNG factions to attend the Wednesday BOCC meeting to get "on the record" that Clatsop County residents "overwhelmingly" do not want LNG and the commissioners had better take heed to listen and do what they can to block any remaining permits Bradwood needs.
People who are angered by the advertising tactics of the "Common Sense" group, Columbia RiverKeepers, Caplan, Schmidt, et al, need to be at the Wednesday evening meeting, 6PM. These people plan on using the minutes from the BOCC meeting to show media, the Governor and other legislatures how many "voices" are speaking out against LNG and how few the pro voices for LNG are.
If people can't make it to the BOCC meeting it is crucial that they email the county commissioners at commissioners@co.clatsop.or.us or send mail to BOCC; 800 Exchange Street, Suite 410; Astoria, OR 97103. Tell them what you thought about the advertising on the referendum. Whether or not it was clear what the vote was on. Let them know if a canvasser came to your home and what they told you the referendum vote was about.

And who are "These People" again?
